FORGOTTEN AND FADED AS THE ORIGINAL PARTS THEY CAME FROM,

A REMINDER OF THE MYTHOLOGY OF TRUMPET LORE.

Among my very first Gig’s at the age of 16 I began seeing these caricatures, names and signatures on the trumpet section parts. The bigger the Star or entertainer the more numerous the book would be filled with these drawings. There, on the torn, ragged, taped and yellowed pages would be these pencil drawn trademarks. Only when the Producer would announce, “That’s a wrap” or “A take” of the final recording would it be customary for the Trumpet section to then autograph their parts for posterity. It was a tradition of the time, as so many of the musicians were so well known themselves, especially to see so many great players on the same date. It was an extension of the Composer’s and arrangers who wrote for the specific talents of those who would be present on the session. Other players would simply sign their name, such as “Shorty” for Shorty Sherock or “Ray” for Ray Lynn. Here above in their own hand are a few of the more notable trademarks from the late 1950’s. Gifts to me from the composer/arrangers of that day and era. It was a tradition until the passing of Conrad Gozzo in 1964.
